Home needed for 2 rats in the Tampa, Fl area! [28 May 2009|04:18am]

_awful
My roommate had to move out of state with very little notice, and she didn't have time to find a new home for her 2 rats Loki and Muffin before she left. I've had rats many, many times, so I don't have a problem taking care of them until I can find them a good home, but I also just plain don't have the time or money to give them the attention and care they deserve.

I've tried to find homes for them with no luck whatsoever. The humane society doesn't take rats because they don't adopt out quickly. Nobody I know can take them. I tried posting them on sites like craigslist, saying there was a $15 adoption fee so I could be sure they wouldn't be used as feeders, no luck there either. I've even tried to find some sort of family-run pet shop that would sell them as pets only, but couldn't find one.

They're both approx. 6-7 months old, brown&white males, and very, very sweet. They've been with my roommate and me since they were babies. They are well socialized, both a bit timid when being taken out of the cage, but are completely fine and content once they've been out for a minute or two. They have never had any health issues, and they're quite energetic.

I really could use some help, they're such little sweethearts, I just wouldn't have it in me to give them to a home where they might be mistreated or used as feeders. I was completely out of ideas until I remembered all the communities I was still in from back when I still had ratties of my own, so this is sort of my last option.

I live in Clearwater, FL, about 20 minutes outside of Tampa. I could drive up to about an hour/hour & a half to meet someone halfway, if needed. The cage can go with them, although the one they are in now is not really big enough for them. The cage they were in was nice and roomy but it was just falling apart so they had to transfer over into one of our spare cages.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Rat Care Guide [04 Sep 2006|05:51am]

OK, so i know this is SO long but ever since i got my rats so many people have been asking me about them and have been interested in getting some of their own. So.. I figured i'd make a guide that was easy to follow and something to hand to pet stores even and potential rat owners who mean well but don't have a clue. I've been working on this for awhile and have learned a lot in the process. If anyone could read through it andsee if there's anything that doesn't seem correct or that i should add that would be amazing. Otherwise, for anyone who's a new rat owner and wants all the info in one place.. There ya go :) Also, if you're neither, scroll to the bottom and read the'neat random facts' section. I learned a lot writing that myself!
Thnx again.

(ignore the crappy formatting ;) I promise it's actually all well laid out in the words document i have it in.)

Here it is!

I actually had some pictures taken with ME and my rats instead everyone else i know/meet/run into on the street and my rats lol..
My bf took them and then i edited them cuz ratties are small and run about so a lot needed to be cropped and lightened and crap.. They're mostly only of tom tho cuz christopher was being hyper and shy.

Not dial up friendly..Collapse )

I should remind myself to maybe shower BEFORE i end up having a bunch of pictures taken of myself..

The ratties are cute neways ;) (xposted.. sorry if you see this more than once)

Hey, i'm jenna. I'm pretty new to having rats but i love them to bits already :) Just trying to get as many different places to absorb rattie info and check out all the cute pics ;)

I've got two boys, a gray mismarked hooded and a veriberk (or so i think he is, actually if someone could tell me what he is for sure that'd be awesome :) named Thomas and Christopher.
They were born April 17th, 2006, adopted from a lady who had brought home a female not knowing she was preggars. There were 6, she was able to keep the 2 females, i got my guys but unfortunately the two remaining boys ended up at a pet store and sold even tho we tried to take them back cuz i'd found a home for them after their only being at the pet store for 1 day.. :( (I hope they ended up in good homes!)
She and i are still in contact and i even take them out once in a while to visit their mom and sisters :) (Under VERY close supervision of course lol.. No one's fixed.) She didn't want to give them up either but she already has 6 rats and her husband didn't want anymore in the house.
I also have two girl meeces, a cat and a fish. I'll post a couple pics of the meece cuz they're still rodents, at least..

Ok.. HUGE PHOTO SPAM!! lol.. Just a few ..

I'm not in any of them tho, all the ppl with the ratties are my friends.. I'll have to get some of the ones with them and me up sometime..

Working for peanuts... [07 Jul 2006|02:45pm]

One of my rats has a love for unsalted peanuts (in the shells).
He has fun tearing them open and eating the peanuts inside.

Any other ideas for some fun, entertaining snacks?

My son with an ol' favorite.
When he sees white rats he says, "That looks like Jimmy!".
He died unexpectedly a few months ago.
(We're not sure why, everything seemed to be normal.)
We miss our little Jimmy.

Litter box set up questions [08 Jun 2006|12:27pm]

My little guy is driving me nuts! A friend thought it would be nice to "surprise" me with one she bought at a store I would never give my money to. He was scared of everything; noise, darkness, bright lights, sudden movements, sneezing, etc. We lived in an old building with loud neighbors. I finally moved and he's been doing a lot better socially. Now that he finally is willing to spend time out from under the newspaper walls he (finally!) stopped setting up I am trying to see if he may be willing to use a litter box. I've tried various sizes of plastic containers in the past, he keeps taking the boxes, emptying them and using them to hide his food.

I am trying to build a grotto style cage for the little guy to help him be a bit more social and visible now that he seems more interested in seeing us and letting us see him, but I need to get him litter trained first.

What kind of containers do you use for litter boxes? I debated gluing the container to a piece of wood, but I worry he'll still manage to flip it and hurt himself, or that he might eat the glue, or that the wood might be bad for him (either ingested or getting moldy). I also wondered about trying to attach the litter box to his cage, but worry he might chew on the wire or pin himself between it trying to move it.

Any suggestions/advice would be most helpful, I wore out the patience of the only rodent owner/trainer I know while trying to ask about the ideal height for a water bottle and she snapped at me, "just make sure the cage is clean and he's got fresh water and food"

Tumor [25 Mar 2006|07:31pm]

_awful
Today I noticed that one of my girls, Kitty, has what I think is a tumor on the side of her face, on her cheek area. It seems to be pretty heavy because her head tilts to the side, and she's walking funny and lopsided. Also, the "tumor" seems to have what looks like a big scab on it. I have no idea how it grew so quickly, because I see them and play with them everyday, and their cage is in my bedroom, and I'm SURE I would have noticed it. I'll be taking her to the vet Monday when they open. My question is, is there anything I should be doing/not doing until then?

I NEED ANSWERS [03 Jan 2006|10:17pm]

what is the likely hood of a female getting pregnant after being with a little boy for about 6 hours?

while at work my little sister decided it would be nice for mouse(male) and sophie(female, the girl im fostering, to hang out. so idk if what to expect. she may be preg. but yeh, i have no clue.
she also thought it would be nice for my other male, casey, to have a nice night out on the town. She stowed him away in her jacket.
i think right now, im just lucky to have them all back safe and unharmed. if it does come to her having babies, i do have a large emough cage to house the family, and also other spare cages...

what should i expect?
can they tell if shes preg. if she goes to the vet?

Just a thought [07 Dec 2005|04:58pm]

One of my ferret communities has a map on a site called Frappr. It seems pretty rock. You don't have to subscribe, no fees, no crap like that, heck ,it doesn't even make you put in an email address. I thought about it and I decided to steal their idea and see just where all the fanciers I chit-chat with are located. Anyone interested can add themselves here:

anyone in the North Carolina peidmont area want a gorgeous full grown healthy female?

i own 3 rats of my own all sweet loving boys. I also work at a pet store where im raising 3 adorable baby boys (2 dumbos, 1 standard hooded) i think of them as my own little boys too.
anyways someone surenderd a beautiful female. i want to take her but i only keep boys, plus im pushed for space. Shes very nice, loves to be handled, and gives kisses. Shes is a standard ear agouti with a little bit of red mixed in with her fur, plus white socks.
when she goes out for adoption she'll probablly go for $2.00, and i want her to go to a good home and not end up as snake food.

ill have a pic. of her tmw....but yeah shes a wonderful rat and would be a great addition to someones ratties family.

I'm not sure how all of you will take this, or if it's allowed, but I wanted to leave the link to my new Rattery i've been putting together! It's incredibly small and my prices are still $10 per rattie, unless you want me to deliver, or meet halfway.

www.freewebs.com/bri_kitty <--- Tell me what you think!^^

Also: I still have my two female hooded & 2 male black berkshire (one with a black spot on his tummy). They're adorable and looking for homes! Three of them have already found homes!

And lastly, I have some photos as well as IMPORTANT QUESTIONS underneath the cut!

Babes! [03 Nov 2005|11:42pm]

bri_kitty
These are the babies I first posted here trying to find homes for! A pair of two girls (one hooded and one berkshire) have already found a wonderful home! I currently have 1 female black berkshire, 2 female black hooded and 2 male black berkshire (one with a black spot on his white tummy!). They're all in great health and are very lovable, just a little shy at first!

I am asking $10 each to help pay for toys, treats, bedding and other materials.

You can pick them up, or I can meet you halfway, or drive the entire way (depending on distance) for a slight increase in fee. I need to pay my friends to drive me and gas prices are sort of crazy!

I'm located in Livermore, California.
